Metabolic disorders
According to the 2025 Ashtabula County Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), 78% of adult residents are overweight or obese, 40% have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, 34% with high cholesterol, and 16% with diabetes. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Ashtabula County, at a rate of 206.5 per 100,000 — nearly three times the Healthy People 2030 target. Adults reported being physically active on just 3.8 of the past 7 days, down from 4.7 in 2022.
Healthy Ashtabula County is working to improve nutrition, physical activity, and early detection through four key approaches:
- Nutrition education where people already are — cooking demonstrations, recipes, and nutrition education in food pantries, schools, and senior centers
- Growing more local food — expanding community gardens at apartment complexes and schools, and exploring hydroponic options
- Making physical activity easier to find — expanding classes and locations, adding virtual and hybrid options, and distributing the Rx for Parks pamphlet and Ashtabula Food Guide
- Increasing access to screenings — bringing mobile screening units to community locations such as libraries
